The Spiritual Side Of Rock n' Roll

by Gregg Prescott, M.S.
Founder, Webmaster, & Editor, In5D.com

From the comedy clubs to the baseball diamond, from the silver screen to the radio waves, from Wall Street to the runway, spirituality knows no bounds. Who knew that even the likes of Jerry Seinfeld, Barry Zito, Gwyneth Paltrow, Howard Stern, Rupert Murdoch, and Gisele Bündchen would be among its devout followers? But as it turns out, even the wild and crazy world of rock ‘n’ roll has its fair share of spiritual seekers. So put down that air guitar and open your mind, because the quest for enlightenment knows no genre boundaries.

It may come as a surprise to many, but even the wild and untamed world of rock ‘n’ roll is not immune to the pull of spirituality. Many musicians have found that, amidst the chaos and excess of the rock ‘n’ roll lifestyle, there is a deeper truth to be found. They have turned to various spiritual practices, such as meditation and yoga, to tap into their higher selves and find meaning in their lives. The result is a form of rock ‘n’ roll that is not just about rebellion and hedonism, but also about self-discovery and transcendence. These performers have shown that, no matter the genre, the human spirit is always seeking something greater.

SPIRITUAL

The Beatles John Lennon could have written a book on spirituality solely based on his many quotes: www.in5d.com

The Beatles John Lennon could have written a book on spirituality solely based on his many quotes:

“That’s what the great masters and mistresses have been saying ever since time began. They can point the way, leave signposts and little instructions in various books that are now called holy and worshiped for the cover of the book and not for what it says, but the instructions are all there for all to see, have always been and always will be.” (14)

“Everything will be okay in the end. If it’s not okay, it’s not the end.” (14)

“Life is what happens when you are busy making other plans.” (14)

“Produce your own dream. If you want to save Peru, go save Peru. It’s quite possible to do anything, but not if you put it on the leaders and the parking meters. Don’t expect Carter or Reagan or John Lennon or Yoko Ono or Bob Dylan or Jesus Christ to come and do it for you. You have to do it yourself.” (14)

“When you do something noble and beautiful and nobody noticed, do not be sad. For the sun every morning is a beautiful spectacle and yet most of the audience still sleeps.” (14)

“If everyone could just be happy with themselves and the choices people around them make, the world would instantly be a better place!” (14)

” I believe in God, but not as one thing, not as an old man in the sky. I believe that what people call God is something in all of us. I believe that what Jesus and Mohammed and Buddha and all the rest said was right. It’s just that the translations have gone wrong.” (14)

“…Christianity will go. It will vanish and shrink. I don’t know what will go first, rock ‘n’ roll or Christianity. We’re more popular than Jesus now. Jesus was all right, but his disciples were thick and ordinary. It’s them twisting it that ruins it for me.” (14)

“You’re all geniuses, and you’re all beautiful. You don’t need anyone to tell you who you are. You are what you are. Get out there and get peace, think peace, and live peace and breathe peace, and you’ll get it as soon as you like.” (14)

I believe in everything until it’s disproved. So I believe in fairies, the myths, dragons. It all exists, even if it’s in your mind. Who’s to say that dreams and nightmares aren’t as real as the here and now? (14)

“Sometimes you wonder, I mean really wonder. I know we make our own reality, and we always have a choice, but how much is preordained? Is there always a fork in the road, and are there two preordained paths that are equally preordained? There could be hundreds of paths where one could go this way or that way — there’s a chance, and it’s very strange sometimes.” (14)

“Imagine all the people living life in peace. You may say I’m a dreamer, but I’m not the only one. I hope someday you’ll join us, and the world will be as one.” (14)

“It matters not who you love, where you love, why you love, when you love or how you love, it matters only that you love” (14)

Aerosmith's lead singer Steven Tyler is a self-proclaimed practitioner of Crowley Magick. in5d.com

Aerosmith’s lead singer Steven Tyler is a self-proclaimed practitioner of Crowley Magick.

“I’ve practiced Crowley Magick so I know it works. I’m not saying that every girl I slept with came at the same time or that I asked her to pray for the same thing I was praying for; namely that Aerosmith would become the greatest American band.” (1)

Tyler even experienced elementals in the form of wood sprites:

“I saw this place in the woods where the sun was coming through and I’m walking around with my slingshot at nine years old… It was so quiet in there I thought I heard something called the children of the woods. It was my first spiritual moment… and I’ve always been writing songs to try to get back to that moment.” (1)

Tyler has an obvious connection to the planet and his natural abilities, stating, “I think I put together the beauty of Mother Nature and music and somewhere in that I felt the presence of God.” (1)

Through his music and lyrics, one can see the spiritual side of legend Jimi Hendrix. in5d.com

Through his music and lyrics, one can see the spiritual side of legend Jimi Hendrix.

“I believed in myself more than anything. And, I suppose in a way, that’s also believing in God. If there is a God and He made you, then if you believe in yourself, you’re also believing in Him…That doesn’t mean you’ve got to believe in heaven and hell and all that stuff. But it does mean that what you are and what you do is your religion… When I get up on stage—well, that’s my whole life. That’s my religion. My music is electric church music, if by ‘church’ you mean ‘religion’, I am electric religion.”  (12)

EXTRATERRESTRIAL

Not only was Jimi Hendrix spiritual, but he also knew there were other forms of intelligent life other than what we have on this planet:

He was convinced that, in the near future, Galacticans from outer space, from another galaxy of great positive power, would come to our planet to help mankind in its struggle against evil. While explaining this, he drew two points representing this higher power coming closer and closer towards our galaxy, the Milky Way, finally reaching Earth.

Jimi then made another sketch with four spiral rays pointing leftwards, telling me that this symbol is a negative one, because its rays point to the left.

He told me that the arrival of the positive power would bring about a great change on our planet. Love, peace and brotherhood among the peoples on Earth would start to blossom again, just as they in the ancient civilization of Atlantis. He said that the signs of the beginning of these events would be when significant unexpected changes started to happen in the world. But he also pointed out that we, the people, would also have to become active and anticipate bringing about these positive changes for ourselves and our world. He explained that people on Earth have been asleep for too long and an awakening is beginning to happen to the people as this higher power approaches our world. (13)

The following is an excerpt from Close Encounters of the Famous: UFOs Among the Stars by Timothy Green Beckley:

“There are other people in the solar system, you know, and they have the same feelings too, not necessarily bad feelings, but see, it upsets their way of living for instance — and they are a whole lot heavier than we are.”
~ Jimi Hendrix

Aerosmith's lead guitarist, Joe Perry, once experienced an unidentified flying object. in5d.com

Aerosmith’s lead guitarist, Joe Perry, once experienced an unidentified flying object.

“We had a place up in New Hampshire out on the lake . . . and I think it’s August there’s usually a lot of meteor showers. And we’ll go out and sit on the boat and watch, because the stars are amazing up there, and watch for meteors. And every once in a while you’ll see something that’s not moving the way it should. And you can convince yourself. You know, hey, a UFO is basically an unidentified flying object. So there are a lot of things that qualify for that. It doesn’t mean it’s a spaceship. It’s just unidentified. You know what I mean? So, like I said, you could convince yourself that it’s something. But I really haven’t really seen anything. But I gotta believe that they’re out there. Until I really see something, I really can’t say ‘yes’ or ‘no,’ but I’ve got an open mind about it.” (2)

Sammy Hagar's UFO Abduction: 'They Were Plugged Into Me'

Former Van Halen frontman, Sammy Hagar also had an experience with a UFO.  In an MTV interview to promote his book, “Red: My Uncensored Life in Rockir?t=bcp11wh33 20&l=as2&o=1&a=006200929X,” Hagar admits he might “sound like a crazy person” to some, but he insists his bizarre experience “wasn’t a dream.”

Hagar opened up about a passage in his book that claims he was contacted by aliens from outer space in California who tapped into his mind through a wireless connection.

“It was real,” the rocker said. “[Aliens] were plugged into me. It was a download situation. This was long before computers or any kind of wireless. There weren’t even wireless telephones. Looking back now, it was like, ‘F—, they downloaded something into me!’ Or they uploaded something from my brain, like an experiment.” (3)

Craggy-faced rocker Mick Jagger is said to have seen two UFOs in the course of his life. One, a cigar-shaped “mothership,” appeared in 1968 while he was camping in Glastonbury with then girlfriend Marianne Faithfull. The other allegedly hovered over the audience while he was performing a gig in California. If Michael Luckman is to be believed, Jagger even had a UFO detector installed in his home. Jagger couldn’t get no satisfaction, though, because it kept going off, whenever he wasn’t in the house! www.in5d.com

Rolling Stones lead singer, Mick Jagger, is said to have seen UFO’s on two different occasions, according to Michael Luckman, author of Alien Rock: The Rock and Roll Extra-terrestrial Connection:

John Lennon saw a UFO at his apartment in New York with his girlfriend May Pang. The object was cone-shaped, but flattened at the top, crowned with a steady red light, and featuring a row of smaller, pulsating white lights. It drew close to the amazed couple in their 17th floor apartment before passing on by. They managed to take some photographs of the object but all came out over-exposed. in5d.com

UFOs seemed to pervade the life of Elvis Presley. Strange lights were seen in the sky at the time Elvis was born; quite a few were seen around him in his life; and one was allegedly seen hovering over the mourners when his coffin was interred in the grounds of Graceland. Some even speculate that perhaps The King himself was an extra-terrestrial - and not in the coffin at all, but looking down on it from above in the flying saucer! (10) in5d.com

MEDITATION

In a Gibson Interview with Metallica's lead guitarist, Kirk Hammet, we learn about this musician's interest in meditation and yoga. in5d.com

In a Gibson Interview with Metallica’s lead guitarist, Kirk Hammett, we learn about this musician’s interest in meditation and yoga.

“I’m really looking forward to seeing India as a country and as a culture, and from there seeing how our fans and our music fit into all of that. Indian culture, for me, is very interesting and very provocative. It’s spiritual and mystical; it’s the birthplace of Buddhism and Hinduism as well as yoga, so I’m very excited to go to the spiritual birthplace of those three disciplines.” (4)

Even before doing a show in front of thousands of people, Hammett can be found doing yoga:

“We definitely have a ritual. We get together beforehand in one room where we just play riffs – ours, someone else’s. We just jam for about 20 minutes. Then we go through our own warm-ups, physical exercises, that kind of thing. I do yoga.” (5)

David Lee Roth, the lead singer of Van Halen, received private Yin Yoga instructions from Master Zink over the course of 20 years. Some of these choreographed techniques and moves can be seen in various Van Halen videos throughout the years.

The Beatles Paul McCartney has been meditating for over 40 years. He met the founder of Transcendental Meditation, Marishi Mahesh Yogi, at a talk at the London Hilton in the August of 1967. “I was personally not in a good place. I think I was just overdoing it in the 60’s, so I was just not very centered. And I was looking for something,” McCartney has said. He's described meditation as a rewarding "system of relaxation." The Beatles traveled to Rishikesh, India to learn from the great guru and spent their free time writing songs—many of which ended up in “The White Album.” in5d.com

Even rock star Sting is a fan of meditation. He practices yoga and meditation with his wife, Trudie Styler. “Like music, yoga is a journey—one that is long enough so you keep developing, and keep learning. I don’t see an end to it,” Sting has said. To bolster his physical and mental health touring, the 61-year-old approaches yoga as a style of meditation. (11)

” A friend of mine built a pyramid for me to meditate under; it was a gift from a long time ago. It was in the room next to my studio, so I went in there and did the solo for the demo; it inspired me.”

A different brain wiring?

When you awaken out of the stupor provided by our educational systems and the mainstream media, you begin to see things in a different light.

Aerosmith’s lead guitarist Joe Perry summed it up brilliantly during his interview with Joe Rogan:  “I think my brain is wired different”. If you’re reading this article and can relate to these musicians, then chances are your brain is wired differently, too… in a good way!
