Are you prepared if a solar flare or a coronal mass ejection (CME) shut down the grid? What options would you have?

Of course, we can still communicate the old-fashioned way with our neighbors but if the power grid goes down, how will you stay in the loop with everything that is going on around you, especially with those who are awake and aware?

Many of us live in communities where our neighbors are ill-informed and even less prepared for such an event.

If the grid shutdown is local, then one option is to get a solar powered and/or hand cranked emergency radio where you can still receive transmissions from nearby or even long distance stations.  You can find these on eBay for under $75.  I just ordered a Kaito Voyager Pro KA600 Digital Solar/Dynamo AM/FM/LW/SW & NOAA Weather Emergency Radio with Alert & RDSir?t=bcp11wh33 20&l=as2&o=1&a=B0051QJJ1E for $61.23 USD.

With the crank device and a USB port on this unit, you could even hand-crank your cellphone’s batter to life if those particular satellites were unaffected by the solar flame or CME.

Product description:

Radio Data System, or RDS, is a communications protocol standard for embedding amounts of digital information in conventional FM radio broadcasts. RDS standardizes several types of information transmitted, including time, station identification and program information. Connected to the Emergency Alert System (EAS) through NWR (National Weather Radio) network provided by NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association), this feature will automatically activate the radio to inform you of any hazardous weather conditions or warnings including natural, environmental and public safety while the radio is set at the “Alert” mode. The newest and most advanced model from Kaito’s Voyager radio family, the KA600 Voyager Pro is designed for both everyday use and emergency preparedness applications. It offers different methods to power up including optional AC/DC adapter, three AA batteries (not included), the built in rechargeable Ni MH battery that can be charged by the AC adapter, hand cranking or a computer, and the patented flip up 180 degree adjustable solar panel provides power for the radio even when no battery is installed. With its revolutionary design and versatile functions, it’s not only an ideal choice of a bedside radio but also an indispensable tool for emergency preparedness purposes, travelling, camping, backpacking and other outdoor activities. Specifications: FM: 88 108 MHz AM (MW): 520 1710 KHz LW (longwave): 150 521 KHz SW (shortwave): 2,300 23,000 KHz NOAA Weather: 1 7 Internal speaker: Diameter 66 mm Headset jack socket: 3.5 mm Sensitivity: FM ≤ 10uV MW ≤ 1mV/m SW ≤ 30uV Rechargeable batteries: 3 Ni MH batteries 600mAh Dimensions: 9 ½ x 5 ½ x 2 ½ inches Weight: 1 pounds Accessories: User manual Earphones Warranty card

Another inexpensive option is getting a ham radio for under $40 USD.  I found one on eBay, BaoFeng UV-5RE Plus(UV-5R Plus) Dual-Band 136-174/400-480 MHz FM Ham Two-way Radioir?t=bcp11wh33 20&l=as2&o=1&a=B00C83AU9S, which cost $37.99 but it is not rechargeable so you would either need a supply of lithium batters or a solar powered/hand crank battery recharger.

For less than $100, I was able to get everything I’ll need to communicate with others in the event of a grid shutdown.

For under $200 USD, you can get a solar kit to power or recharge common electrical items.  There is a 45 Watt Solar Panel Kit made by Thunderboltir?t=bcp11wh33 20&l=as2&o=1&a=B0088ERIDC that I plan on purchasing.  The product is described as follows:

Use the sun’s power to run TVs, lights, computers and recharge 12VDC batteries! •Three 15 watt solar panels produce clean, quiet energy •Lightweight, weatherproof construction •Amorphous silicon solar cells for maximum output in both bright and cloudy conditions •Voltage regulator has easy-to-read LED display, 12V cigarette lighter socket, 5V USB, 3-6-9V DC outlets and two 12V sockets for the included Light Kit •Includes mounting hardware, 12V Light Kit, battery terminal clamps and universal DC power adapter

Please don’t misconstrue this article as fear mongering in any way. One of the most important lessons we can learn is from astrology and the cycles of time. In the Earth’s history, these types of events have happened in the past and will most likely happen again in the future. I would much rather be prepared and never have to use something like this than to be unprepared and lost.

Are you prepared if a solar flare or CME shuts down the grid?  What suggestions do you have for ways to communicate with one another over long distances? Comment below!

Sending you all infinite LOVE and Light!

Gregg
