How To Holistically Raise Your Dog Or Puppy

If your body is your temple, then shouldn’t your dog or puppy’s body be the same?

Most dog foods contain the worst end products known to man, yet pet commercials try to convince us that these products are the best products available for our pets.

Think of it this way. The least healthiest food in a grocery store is found on the inside aisles (GMO’s, highly processed, etc…) while the healthiest is found on the perimeter of the store. Your dog or puppy food is no exception as most dog foods are in the center aisles with all of the other GMO’s and processed foods..

Try to avoid GMO’s and Grains in their food

Many of the grains used in conventional dog or puppy food contain GMO’s, which have been proven to cause tumors in laboratory rat experiments. Do you want your dog to have tumors as well (or yourself if you are still eating GMO’s)?

If the breeder or previous owner of your puppy or dog was not feeding him organically or holistically, you will want to slowly introduce holistic, organic food to your dog’s diet. Organic dog food is much higher in natural proteins and will most likely give your dog diarrhea if not slowly mixed in to his or her daily diet.

Avoid toxic plastics

While it is nearly impossible to be 100% organic or BPA free in our own lives, your dog will probably follow the same pattern. For example, you might end up buying a few toys that contain BPA’s or a dog bone from a non-organic source, but overall, try to avoid them as much as possible.

Healthy treats!

There is a wide variety of holistic dog treats available, many of which contain grains, which my vet recommended against, but you can also find a variety of non-grain, holistic treats and snacks for your puppy or dog.

We are starting to see more and more holistic veterinarians in every city, so if this is an option then I would highly recommend using a holistic vet over a traditional vet.

Consult a holistic vet regarding vaccines

If you are raising a puppy, there are certain shots and vaccinations that they either do not need or can wait until they are older. One particular vaccine is called Leptospirosis, which the breeder from where I bought my puppy stated that it was not in my puppy’s best interest to have.

Heartworm, Parvo and rabies medications can also wait until your puppy is 6 months old, but be sure to have his or her stool checked periodically to ensure that he or she does not have heartworms. If you choose this route, be sure your puppy is not eating his own (or any other) fecal matter. You may also need to avoid places, such as the dog park, until they’re at least 6 months old where they might pick up heartworms.

Don’t give your dog fluoridated tap water!!!

Just as important as the water is what container your dog is drinking from. Be sure to buy BPA free, eco-friendly products if you are using any type of plastic bowls for your dog’s food and water.

By the time most dogs reach the age of 2 or 3, they already have a white ring around their mouths from tap water, resulting from the chlorine, fluoride and various other chemicals in our water supply. Unless you have non-fluoridated water or have your own spring-fed well, then you may consider giving your dog the same water that you drink.

Believe me, the dogs know the difference. Try this experiment. Start out with two clean bowls. Pour tap water in one bowl and spring water in the other. Your dog will choose the spring water every time! So what is he trying to tell you? Basically, tap water should not be consumed by either man or animal (or plants!).

You can also add ozone to your dog’s water (as well as your own water!), which will give him added benefits.

The cost of raising your dog or puppy holistically and organically will be a little bit more than with buying or giving them traditional GMO, BPA and fluoridated products, but in the end, your dog will lead a happy and healthy lifestyle with relatively no illnesses.

With all of the unconditional love they give to us, this is the least we can do for them!
