The Power of Orgone Energy: Wilhelm Reich’s Forbidden Cancer Invention
As with many scientific pioneers, Wilhelm Reich’s ideas were not always well-received in his time. However, his invention of the “orgone accumulator” is a shining example of his dedication to understanding and healing the human body.

Reich’s idea was based on the concept of “orgone energy” – a term he coined to describe the universal life force that permeates all living things. He believed that this energy could be concentrated and harnessed through his invention, the orgone accumulator. The accumulator was essentially a box made of layers of organic and inorganic materials that could harness and concentrate this energy. Reich claimed that sitting in the box for just a few 15-minute sessions could cure cancer, heart disease, arthritis and many other ailments.
Despite positive reports from patients who had used the accumulator, Reich’s work was met with skepticism and even hostility from many in the scientific community. The FDA banned his invention and confiscated all of his materials.
The FDA ultimately concluded that his claims were unfounded and that his device was fraudulent. In 1954, a federal court issued an injunction against Reich, prohibiting him from promoting or selling his device. However, Reich continued to defy the court order, and he was ultimately found guilty of contempt of court in 1956. He was sentenced to two years in prison, where he died in 1957 of heart failure before he could serve his full sentence.
In recent years, there has been renewed interest in Reich’s work and his orgone accumulator. Some scientists and researchers are now studying orgone energy and its potential uses in healing and well-being. Many have also come to see the suppression of Reich’s work as a tragic loss for the field of medicine and human health.
The concept of “life energy” or “Chi/Prana” is not a new one, and is found in many ancient healing traditions from around the world. Wilhelm Reich’s work was a modern interpretation of this idea, and his invention of the orgone accumulator was an attempt to harness and concentrate this energy in a scientific way.
Reich’s work was controversial and often at odds with mainstream scientific thought.
That being said, Big Cancer brings in a ton of money every year. According to the National Cancer Institute, the National Institutes of Health, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the estimated total cost of cancer care in the United States in 2020 was $200.5 billion. If Reich’s invention truly worked, then Big Cancer would have been put out of business many decades ago.
Despite the controversy surrounding his work, Wilhelm Reich’s dedication to understanding the human body and its potential for healing was truly remarkable. His orgone accumulator may have been ahead of its time, but it remains an important part of the history of alternative medicine and the pursuit of human well-being.
