Imbolc Transforms, Inner Embers Spark Renewal

Blessed Imbolc 2024! In the Northern Hemisphere, Imbolc, the Pagan celebration of springtime, began at sundown on Wednesday, February 1, and continues on Thursday, February 2 (Groundhog Day in the United States), ending at sundown that day.

It is also known as St. Brigid’s Day in Gaelic tradition, and it takes place approximately halfway between the Winter Solstice and Spring (Vernal) Equinox. It is essentially the celebration of the very beginning of spring—metaphorically ‘lighting the fire’ for the returning sun and warm weather to come!

Imbolc is a time to focus on new beginnings, the Divine Feminine, and the fire element. It is a time to let go of the old—what has become burdensome for us to continue to carry—and welcome in new beginnings as springtime emerges.

The word “Imbolc” likely translates to “in the womb”. At this point in the Wheel of the Year, the spring flowers are ‘in the womb’ and getting ready to soon emerge! Here in Western New York it certainly doesn’t feel like spring, but Imbolc is a wonderful reminder that warmer weather is right around the corner!

It is tradition to make a Brigid’s cross for Imbolc. All you need is some yarn, some sticks, and some patience and creativity!
