All About Tulpas - Deliberately Created Imaginary Friends

by Missy Marston,

What is it?

The concept of a tulpa comes from Buddhism, specifically the Indian and Tibetan sects. Indian Buddhism considers tulpas to be “mind-made bodies”, and used the technique as a way to explore other realms. Tibetan Buddhists considered tulpas to be “thoughtforms” and used them to master discipline.

Tulpas are sentient, original beings with no corporeal body. They can look like anything the mind can conjure – a tree, a dog, a rock, a person, a morphing blob, anything! Tulpas form their own personal thoughts, have their own unique emotions, and are in control of their own bodies. Tulpas can be seen solely in your mind or can be manifested physically with practice. Of course, the Tulpa’s form is in a way hallucinogenic. You may be able to see it, but you cannot touch it and others won’t be able to see it.

What isn’t it?

Creating a tulpa is not in any way giving yourself a mental disorder. It isn’t schizophrenia, dissociative identity disorder, or any disabling mental health issue. The tulpas form may be described as hallucinogenic, but it is important to understand that they are a fully sentient part of your conscious. The visualization of its body is considered an advanced hallucination. Monks use it as inspiration, a way to calm fears, try new things, and as a method towards self-discovery.

So, do you think you could commit to an outwardly invisible, always present companion? Do you have the time commitment? Tulpas are living, sentient beings. They have feelings and produce their own thoughts. Consider your motivations; what are you creating this entity for? Are they selfish reasons?

Why Shouldn’t I Make a Tulpa?

Your tulpa may repeat the same joke everyday, or have a laugh that eventually becomes annoying. Tulpas have their own thoughts and feelings and therefore can feel neglected, be hurt by something you’ve said, or even lash out at you verbally. Tulpas are like friends; they can sometimes hurt your feelings. Just like in any relationship, communication is key and resentment is always a possibility. One thing to understand is that you can’t just make your tulpa go away. Just as it takes hours and hours of work to manifest your tulpa, it will take hours and hours of ignoring them to make them go away. Then there is the moral dilemma: am I killing a living thing? Also, you will never be able to physically touch your tulpa. Be sure to consider these things before beginning to manifest a tulpa.

Why Should I Make a Tulpa?

Tulpas can help you fix bad habits. If you are a recovering alcoholic, you should give your tulpa the traits of sobriety and persistence. If you bite your nails you could create a tulpa who makes an annoying noise every time you try to bite your nails. They can be a great asset towards personal transformations. Tulpas also make you more consistently aware of your subconscious because they are a part of your remote conscious and esoteric unconscious. You can discover new things through your tulpas understanding of you. Often times, those who create tulpas are more empathetic, due to the constant necessity of understanding your companion’s thoughts and emotions.
